What people earn in Spain — the data explained
The national average salary
According to INE, Spain's average annual salary in 2024 was €29,540.26 before tax per worker, 5.3% up on the year before. The median was €24,497.17, so half of all workers earn less than that. Salaries are highest in the Basque Country (€35,170.28) and lowest in Extremadura (€24,979.44). The figures were published on 28 May 2026.
Why the map shows a different number
The map does not show salaries. It shows net household income: everything the people living together receive after tax, including every earner's pay, pensions and benefits. The data comes from INE's Atlas de Renta for 2023. For comparing provinces it is the more useful measure, because it reflects how many earners a household has and how many people live on a pension.

The median across the 52 provinces is €35,386 a year. The highest income is 1.7 times the lowest.
How much rent eats into local income
Renting an 80 m² flat at the median asking price takes between 22% and 49% of a local household's net income. It is heaviest in Málaga (49%), the Balearic Islands (43%), Madrid (43%) and Santa Cruz de Tenerife (42%), and lightest in Teruel (22%), Soria (22%), Ciudad Real (23%) and Lugo (23%). The sum is simple: price per m² × 80 × 12 months, divided by annual income. Full rent figures are on the rent prices page.
